Gen Z: 1 Samuel 8
So, Samuel got old, and he put his sons in charge of Israel. Major vibes.
His first son was Joel, and the second was Abiah; they were judging in Beer–sheba, no cap.
But his sons weren't on his level, chasing cash, taking bribes, and messing up judgment. Savage.
Then all the elders of Israel gathered up and went to Samuel in Ramah, like a squad.
They said, "Yo, you're old, and your sons ain't doing it right. We want a king to judge us, like all the other nations."
This hit Samuel hard, so he prayed to the Lord, fr.
The Lord told Samuel, "Listen to what the people are saying; they ain't rejecting you, they’re rejecting me from reigning over them."
Just like all the stuff they've done since I brought them outta Egypt, ditching me for other gods, they're doing the same to you.
So, listen to them, but still give them a heads up about what having a king means.
Samuel told the people all the words from the Lord about wanting a king.
He said, "This is how a king will roll: He'll take your sons for his chariots and have them run ahead, no cap."
He'll put captains over thousands and fifties, making them work the land and harvest, all for his war stuff.
He'll take your daughters to be bakers and cooks, like, for real.
He'll take your best fields and vineyards and give them to his crew, total sus move.
He'll take a tenth of your crops and vineyards for his officials, straight up.
He'll take your servants and the best young men for his work, no cap.
He'll take a tenth of your sheep, and you'll end up being his servants, periodt.
You'll cry out one day because of the king you chose, and the Lord won't even hear you then.
But the people were like, "Nah, we want a king over us," totally ignoring Samuel.
They wanted to be like all the nations, with a king to judge and fight their battles, lit.
Samuel heard everything and told it to the Lord, like a recap.
The Lord said to Samuel, "Listen to them and give them a king." Samuel told the men of Israel, "Alright, go back to your cities."
